Twitter users in the United States are younger, better educated and identify more with the left than the general population, a survey showed on Wednesday.

Only 14% of Twitter users identified their political vision as "very conservative" compared to 25% of the general population.

A similar proportion of Twitter users and American adults identified themselves as "very liberal".

The survey found that 90% of Twitter users rarely tweet, while 10% of active people are responsible for 80% of Twitter messages transmitted by Americans.The average Twitter user posts two tweets per month, follows 89 accounts and has 25 followers.

"Active" users are more likely to be women, who represent more than 65% of this group, and more likely to tweet about politics, according to researchers.

The poll comes amid intense pressure from President Donald Trump and his Republican allies who allege that Twitter and other social networks are biased against conservatives, a claim that companies reject outright.

Pew surveyed 2,791 American adults in November and December 2018 who were willing to share their Twitter handling. The margin of error of the study was estimated at 3%.
